"Reviving Serenity: Samsung's Endeavor in Restoring the 19-Acre Shikaripalya Lake"

In a remarkable display of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the collaborative efforts of SSIR (Samsung Semiconductor India Research) and HandsOnCSR have breathed new life into the 19-acre Shikaripalya lake in Bangalore's Electronic City. This venture, firmly rooted in sustainability principles, centered on the restoration of the lake, which had been plagued by issues like waste accumulation, sludge formation, and sewage contamination.

The project's foundation was built on a comprehensive vision of rejuvenation that aligned seamlessly with sustainability values. SSIR's dedication to positive change and ecological restoration was evident in its commitment to reversing the lake's degradation and its ripple effects on the environment.

Objectives:

  • Holistic vision aligned with sustainability principles.
  • Reversal of lake degradation and environmental impacts.
  • Positive change through corporate responsibility.
  • Tackling issues through a multi-phase approach.

Activities of the Project:

The project unfolded across three progressive phases, each embracing the ethos of sustainable rehabilitation. Phase 1 embarked on crucial tasks like de-weeding, de-watering, and the systematic removal of sludge and silt. Bund reinforcement and the revitalization of inlets and outlets were equally vital. Phase 2 continued the journey, intensifying silt removal, reinforcing bunds, and nurturing a lagoon ecosystem. Concurrently, activities like tree plantation and encroachment removal underscored the project's commitment to sustainability. In Phase 3, the emphasis extended to natural sewage treatment, aquatic flora plantation for water purification, and essential infrastructural improvements, resonating with the principles of sustainable development.

Impact:

  • De-watering in Phase 1 removed sludge, silt, and sewage water.
  • Enhanced water-holding capacity and ecological features.
  • Strategic use of nine earthmovers for operational efficiency.
  • Expansion of lake capacity from 19.2 crore to 30.7 crore liters.

Challenges Faced:

  • Adverse weather during monsoons highlights the need for resilience.
  • Challenges in bund strengthening and complexities of sustainability.
  • Encroachments and political influences necessitating measured responses.
  • Ongoing issue of plastic waste underscoring the need for holistic efforts.

Outcomes:

  • Increased footfall for early morning walks showcasing renewed vitality.
  • Collaborations with the Forest Department for ecological balance.
  • Endorsement from National Green Tribunal (NGT) reinforcing enhanced status.
  • Substantial sewage flow reduction aligned with sustainability.
  • Carbon sequestration, community health improvement, and better water availability.
